Message from the Principal

Your feedback is welcomed

Thank you to the parents/carers that took the time to fill out our recent satisfaction survey based on Ofsted questions.  I am delighted to share with you the infographic below which not only shows the satisfaction, but also where we need to improve.

Following your feedback, we are already working on a number of areas. Such as inviting parents into school to view the school & reviewing our website to ensure enhanced communication about what your child is learning is a regular half termly feature.  Communication and feedback is an area I hope we can explore through a new initiative of an online Parents’ Forum so issues can be clarified.  Please continue to feedback to us as we wish to use your feedback to further improve the school for the benefit of your child/children.

Best wishes

Year 9 Workshops
During last week some Year 9 students have taken part in workshops delivered by staff from Trinity College, Cambridge University

The first workshop took students through a session allowing them to find out about what is life is like at university.

This was followed with a session that focused on creative writing. Students took words from well known books and poems and used them to create their own piece of work for the Litmus writing initative. Many students created poems with art work, under the theme of 'In Common'.

The session really allowed for the students to show their creativity and express their feelings through the use of words and art.

MFL Travel Workshop
Last Tuesday the Languages Department hosted 60 year 7 students for a Travel Workshop, as part of the school-wide Curriculum Day.

Students were able to apply their Italian knowledge to four different activities, designed to show how useful language skills can be in real-life settings. They also had the opportunity to increase their cultural awareness of Italian destinations, applying skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and even numeracy skills, since of the activities involved planning a trip to Italy and sticking to a budget. Some lucky students had an imaginary budget of 10,000 Euros, so chose to travel to Italy by private jet, have a helicopter tour and take home a designer wardrobe, whereas others with a more modest budget had to settle for coach travel and dinners at the local pizzeria!

Student feedback from the workshop was extremely positive, with 90% of students rating their enjoyment as 4 or 5 out of 5 stars.  We hope to offer the event to other Year 7 students later in the school year.

Year 8 & 9 Basketball Tourament
On Monday Ken Stimpson hosted the year 8 and 9 basketball tournament between ourselves, Queen Katherine Academy and Arthur Mellows

In the first game the team took on Arthur Mellows. The game started off fairly evenly with both teams having some early possession of the ball but without any baskets being scored. Then midway through the first half Arthur Mellows opened the scoring. We replied immediately with the next attack. Arthur Mellows then took control in the second part of the half to lead 8-4 at half time. The management staff spoke to the team about marking their man and "know who you are marking" along with a few tactical changes. This then lead to the team dominating the open period of the second half scoring 8 unanswered points to lead 12 - 8. Arthur Mellows did pull 2 points back but two clean scores for the team, gave them a 16-10 victory.

In the second game they took on Queen Katherine to which the starting line up was that, that had finished the Arthur Mellows game. The team started on the front foot creating chances but unable to score, then a flurry of points midway through the half gave the team a 6-0 lead. They conceded a breakaway basket just before half time to lead 6-2 at the break. The second half started quickly with both teams having early possession of the ball but struggling to create any clear cut openings with both defences on top. Then just after the midway point in the half the Queen Katherine number 8 sunk a long range effort from just inside the 3 point line to pull two points back. The half finished frantically with both teams creating chances but unable to take any. The team ran out 6-4 winners and as a result the team have progressed to the next stage of the competition.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the students that took part.

Year 7 - Student of the week
Well done to all students nominated for student of the week, the year 7's continue to be outstanding in all aspect of school life, keep up the good work.

We held tours for year 7 parents to come into lessons.  They got to see what year 7's are learning and see some of the work they are currently doing.  The feedback we had back from parents was fabulous.  Please see some quotes below:

"Loves attending this school. I have seen a huge improvement in his attitude towards
learning. He actually enjoys learning now. He finds the teachers engaging and supportive. "

"It was very informative and great to see my son in a lesson.  Children and the teachers all looked relaxed and happy. I was very impressed and have been very impressed with how my child has settled in and is keen to go to school to do his homework to make friends. He is just happy."

We will be doing more tours next year keep a look out for the dates.

Thank you all for your continued support.
