Further Mathematics

What will I learn?

The Further Mathematics course is an AS qualification which broadens and deepens the mathematics covered for AS/A2 Mathematics.

It is designed to be studied alongside AS and A2 Mathematics. If you enjoy mathematics, this provides a further challenge and the opportunity to explore different mathematical concepts. You will be introduced to new areas of Pure Mathematics and some topics from Decision Mathematics, as well as studying further applications of mathematics in mechanics and statistics.

The Further Pure Mathematics topics include:

Proof; Complex numbers; Matrices; Further algebra and functions; Further Calculus; Vectors

Assessment:

Assessment of the AS level Further Mathematics course is by 2 written examination papers in May/June. There is no coursework component.

Each written examination paper is 1 hour 30 minutes.

What can I do next?
You may wish to study Mathematics or a subject with some mathematical content to a higher level. Students with a qualification in Further Mathematics distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in their applications for university and future employment. Students who take Further Mathematics demonstrate a commitment to their studies as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree. An experience of Further Mathematics can ease the transition from sixth form to university courses for some, as some of the course content of the first year will be familiar, for example, if you are planning to study for a degree in Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics. The Further Mathematics course helps students to develop skills in problem-solving, mathematical communication, decision making and analysis which are viewed positively in many areas of employment.
