National Extended Certificate in Art & Design

What will I learn?

This is a highly practical course and will give you a wide variety of
specialist experience in a range of disciplines. Examples of these
are painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, set design,
graphic design. You will work in a vocational context following real life
briefs. You will also study the work of relevant artists and designers
and use this to develop and inspire your own work. There is no
examination at the end of this course so you will be able to have an
accurate understanding of how well you are doing and be given the
opportunity to improve and develop throughout.

Further course content:

The course is made of 4 units, 3 of which are mandatory, 2 of these are externally set assignment.

Internally Set Units:
In this part you will work on a variety of real assignment written and set by the art department.

Externally Set Units:
This is equivalent to an exam. You will be given an externally set assignment. This is worth 58% of your overall qualification.

  • Visual recording and communication (Externally Assessed)
  • Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design (Externally Assessed)
  • The Creative Process (Internally Assessed)
  • A teacher guided option will be available for the final unit, from Fine Art, 3D Design, Textiles or Design Crafts
Enrichment activities:

Throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to go on a wide
variety of trips to access primary source material to inspire your artwork
and to see the work of other artists, including practicing professionals. Trips
may include; London galleries, New Designers Exhibition, Yorkshire Sculpture
Park, Hunstanton and Cambridge.

Assessment:

Your work will be assessed throughout each assignment against key criteria
so that you know exactly how well you are doing and what you need to do to
reach the next level. You will be given as much teacher support as you need.
Once your assignment is completed you will be given final feedback and an
opportunity to act on this independently before your final summative grade
is awarded.

You will be assessed on each of the units and awarded a Pass (E), Merit (C) or
Distinction (A).

What can I do next?

This course is ideal for students who have a strong commitment to Art and
Design and may wish to move towards a career in some aspect of the industry.
Examples of this may be fashion designer, textiles designer, animator, graphic
designer, fine artist, illustrator, interior designer, jewellery designer, product
designer, set designer, photographer.

The qualification is accepted by all institutions of Higher Education for a wide
range of courses or is equally acceptable for entry into employment.
