Children’s Play, Learning and Development
The aim of the course is to equip you with both knowledge and skills to care for young children in a wide variety of settings (day nurseries, children’s centres, reception class, infant class, nursery class, special school, child-minders, and family refuge centres) so the content reflects the breadth of work opportunities. As part of the course you will need to complete a 50 hour work experience placement in a child care setting such as a nursery, playgroup or primary school.
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Children’s Play, Learning and Development is a 360 guided-learning-hour (GLH) qualification that consists of 3 mandatory units and 1 optional unit. You will also be required to complete 50 hours of work placement within a children’s (EYFS) setting. The Units are as follows:
Unit 1: Children’s Development (externally assessed examination)
Unit 2: Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills (externally assessed task)
Unit 3: Play and Learning (coursework)
Unit 5: Keeping Children Safe (coursework)
Your progress is mainly assessed during the course, through your assignments, practical work, project work and responses to case studies. You will also be required to pass an examination to achieve your qualification as well as a further task which is also externally assessed. The other 2 units consist of coursework and will be marked internally. In addition to your tutors’ assessment you will develop the ability to carry out your own evaluation of your success. Having provided evidence in these ways to show that you are competent in each unit you gain a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction * grade.
There are rewarding jobs in both the public and private sector in private nurseries, nursery classes, children’s centres, health centres and private families. There are also posts available in infant and special schools. Successful students may also wish to pursue further study at university level.
