Magistrates Court Visit November 2017

Year 12, 13 and 14 Law students were invited by local magistrates to tour the Magistrates courts in Peterborough.

Students were able to discuss the roles and functions of the Magistrates and District Judges that preside there with a Justice of the Peace.

Students were able to take part in some activities relating to the roles of the Magistrates and also take part in a role play where they were able to determine a sentence using guidelines and judicial procedures.

Students were then invited to sit in 2 courts in the public gallery and watch actual cases being heard.

Reason for event

This visit provided our Post 16 Law students with the chance to explore the roles and function of the Magistrates and District Judges at the local Magistrates court in Peterborough. The students were able to apply theoretical learning to real life cases and see first-hand how the Criminal Justice system processes summary cases. This visit helped to embed and underpin knowledge about the types of crime dealt with and also helped them to evaluate the role of lay people within the justice system.
