Urgent Message to Parents

It has been brought to my attention that following the recent Peterborough Telegraph article regarding the concerns about school funding, a number of parents have contacted the school understandably raising concerns about how this may affect their child’s quality of education.

I wish to assure you that we are not making any cutbacks in staffing, nor are we reducing school hours or anything else that would affect the high quality of education that we provide. We have and will continue to manage our budget, so that we offer the highest level of education that we can.  We have submitted a three year budget forecast that supports this and we are fully staffed with highly qualified professionals in all subject areas.

The headline in the Peterborough Telegraph was picking up a story from a small number of schools in Cambridgeshire.  There are no such concerns here at Ken Stimpson Community School, but it was designed to raise the national awareness of insufficient education funding within and beyond Peterborough.

Activity Day

On the penultimate newsletter of the academic year, I am going to allow the amazing photos from our Activities Day, express how proud we are of our pupils and celebrate that education is also about culturally enriching students.

A big thank you to the staff for organising the rich and diverse events. I know that this is echoed by the students who were grateful for the opportunities afforded, the relationships forged and the memories made.

Next week the final newsletter will be posted on Thursday 18 July.

Best wishes

Year 8 Insight Group
The Year 8 Insight group visited Cambridge University on Tuesday 9 July for the final session in this programme.

The event was mixed with other schools from across Peterborough and the focus was on the students’ future, Higher Education and Careers. Students listened to a speech on employability skills by Frances Meegan from Cambridge University’s Careers Service, looked round a small Fresher’s Fair, spoke to students regarding the extra opportunities available to University students and completed a task surrounding future aspirations. The students involved have shown enthusiasm and commitment throughout the 2 year programme and we trust that they have gained some valuable skills and knowledge throughout! Well done to all those involved!

Swavesey Science Challenge – The Royal baby
A select group of students represented Ken Stimpson School in the Cambridgeshire School Science challenge on Wed 10 July, designing and testing products for the Royal baby.

The team consisted of two year seven, two year eight and two year nine students.  They were given 4 challenges to complete in two hours (with no adult help):

  • How much Royal wee could a nappy hold? (It was quite a lot!)
  • Design a car seat for the Royal baby
  • Investigate how much energy is in the baby’s food
  • A scientific quiz

They showed excellent scientific and teamworking skills in the challenges.  As the competition is running all week for different schools, the students will have to wait until next week to see how they got on.  Fingers crossed!
